From one girl to another, tips on packing for your first motorcycle road trip

Like me, you have already been convinced to take your first motorcycle road trip. Now the first thing that comes to your mind is, what should a girl wear and pack?

It’s important to mention that I did not ride the bike, I was only a passenger during the trip. I don’t know anything on the important things like gas or tires. This is a list for someone who does not have to worry on the essentials of the motorcycle itself, but on what to wear and pack.

The helmet:

Believe me, nothing will make you have a better time than feeling safe. So the first thing you need is a good helmet. You need to try it on before you choose it. There are two rules for a good helmet:

1. Not to tight or it will give you a headache.

2. Not to loose or it could fall off easily in case of an emergency.

It’s all about the helmet!

The Jacket:

A good wind and water proof jacket is vital! Also there are some jackets that have double protection in certain parts like your elbows or shoulders. If you want even more technology, there are jackets that have little zippers you open on the back for ventilation, in case your road trip is in a hot weather environment.

Gloves:

You need gloves! I did a Baja trip and some parts meant crossing a dessert. But even with a heavy heat you should wear gloves because your hands can get badly sun burned.

Jeans:

I used jeans during my trip. They were great because they adapt to all weathers. When it got hot they protected me from the sun. And I do recommend leggings in case it gets too windy so you don’t get cold.

High cut hiking boots:

One of the most important things for your trip is to take care of your ankles. When you get on and off the bike you can easily hurt yourself.

Extras:

  • Basic toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and soap. Everything Travel size.
  • Headlamp.
  • Water.
  • Sunblock, even though you wear a helmet you take it off many times, and you are more exposed to the sun.
  • Wipes. They just save you on every road trip.
  • Polarized sunglasses.
  • Extra pair of everything you wear in case it starts raining and you get completely wet.
  • First aid kit.
  • Battery for your cellphone. Remember you are not going by car and not all bikes have room to charge more than one phone.

Think that everything must fit in those boxes

What not to take:

Basically anything that takes up space like makeup and hair products. Things that are not essential.

There really is not much space

Dry bag:

Everything, and I repeat, everything should go in a duffel bag or compression bag that is waterproof. When all your belongings are exposed and it starts to rain, believe me you will want your documents intact and an extra pair of dry clothing.

Remember that safety is first! Once you got that covered, it’s just about enjoying the ride. Forget about looking pretty, your hair will get messed up even if you use a perfect braid the whole time. So just focus on the sensation of freedom. Freedom from society rules and stereotypes.
