5 reasons to visit the Nevado de Toluca in Mexico

It’s the fourth highest peak in Mexico, which makes it worth getting to know it. Here are 5 reasons to visit the Nevado de Toluca in Mexico.

1. It’s an extinct volcano

The Nevado de Toluca in Mexico is an extinct volcano that belongs to the Nevado de Toluca National Park. It reaches an altitude of 4645 meters, but there is nothing to worry about, you don’t need to be in great shape to reach one of its main features, the lagoons. Even though the volcano is extinct, it has seismic activity and it belongs to the Pacific Ring of Fire.

2. Close to Mexico City

The Nevado de Toluca is located just an hour and a half from the exit of Santa Fe. This is a great day trip from Mexico City, you can leave early in the morning and be back at night, no need to pay for a hotel! Actually I don’t even know if there are any hotels around there, if you know any be sure to comment.

3. It has lagoons in the middle of the crater

Like we mentioned in our first point, in the middle of the crater there are lagoons, and they are crystal clear beauties! There are two, one is Laguna del Sol, the other is Laguna de la Luna. And guess what! the water is safe to drink, but to be honest I have never got the courage to drink it myself.

4. Chance to see snow near Mexico City

Mexico City’s metropolitan area is known for having solid good weather all year round, this means no harsh winters. For people living in this huge metropolis, visiting the Nevado de Toluca is a great chance to see some snow and have a taste of a white winter without having to take a plane. Unfortunately it is important to mention that there is no snow all year round, so you must check the weather before going. The average temperature is -4 °C a 12 °C, be sure to dress accordingly.

5. You can do all sort of activities

The wonderful thing about this peak is that you can take it to the level you want. You can go to the maximum professional hike and reach the 4645 meters. But you can also take it chill and get to the lagoons, have a picnic or do some meditation and yoga. If you are interested in doing yoga at the Nevado, you should definitely get in touch with @mars_yogui. I went with her on a guided yoga meditation day, and the experience was rewarding, challenging and so peacefull.
