My first moto road trip

My first motorcycle road trip through Baja California Norte.

I did my very first motorcycle road trip ever, and I chose Baja for it. The plan, hit the Baja 250 at San Felipe. Here are all the tips so you can enjoy the Baja baby race.

When I was starting The Local Affair, I was telling my friend Gabriel all about it. Gabriel is from Tijuana, and he proposed I flew there so we could go to the Baja 250 race at San Felipe. It was a great plan so I could get to know that small city with a beautiful Sea of Cortes ocean line.

Gabriel said we were going on his motorcycle, my first reaction was to tell him, “no way”. I was so scared of motorcycles and I had never done such a long trip in one of them. But the route was so good that I decided to accept his proposal.

The Route

  • Starting point: Tijuana
  • Supplies: Calimax Puerto Nuevo
  • Must Stop: Mirador de Ensenada
  • Meal: Ojos Negros
  • Final stop: San Felipe

We left Tijuana at 7:00 am. We stopped at Calimax Puerto Nuevo because it is just on the way to Ensenada, you don’t have to get into the city. There, you can find so many regional products like: Baja Wild Tuna, Certified Angus Beef and La B cheese.

The next stop was the Ensenada Mirador, an amazing viewpoint where you can appreciate the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. After that, we headed east, to cross the Peninsula. We stopped at Ojos Negros, a small ghost town where we had Menudo, a traditional dish from the North of Mexico. I recommend you stop anywhere that has a meal sign. They all sell burritos and menudo, and they are all amazing!

The Race

We got to San Felipe late afternoon, so we just went straight to sleep and get some rest for the next day. The Baja 250 race, starts on a Saturday morning and ends Sunday afternoon.

The finish line is just on the main street in front of the beach. There are a lot of people, restaurants, street food, music is up and happening. It is very easy to witness the cars come and go.

We decided to stop at the Calimax on the main avenue, and buy a cooler so we could make our own six pack with regional artisanal beer. Baja California has an upcoming brewery scene where you can find many brands like Insurgente, Finísima, Baja Brewing, Wendlant, Fauna y Border Psycho, Urbana, Lagunitas y Cucapá, that are just delicious.

Once we were fully equipped from what we bought at Puerto Nuevo and there, we headed to the beach to enjoy all of our goodies. I was surprised to see there where so many Americans hanging out there that drive for miles every year to spend the weekend at the race.

Last thoughts:

  • North Baja is a great state to make a motorcycle road trip. It’s very safe and you can find provisions everywhere. for example, Calimax the supermarket chain has 81 stores around the region that are fully equipped.
  • For all the car fans, it has many cool races happening throughout the year.
  • Baja 250 is the baby race of them all, but is really worth it because San Felipe has a beautiful Sea of Cortes beach.
  • Traveling in a motorcycle is so cool, if you haven’t done it yet, I highly recommend it.
